A riverside bicycle ride and picnic on Stourbridge Common
One of the main things that attracted me to Cambridge (other than my husband) was the river. I love how it snakes through the city and gives you glimpses into the colleges. But what I love the most is the countryside it leads to.
My husband and I like nothing more than packing up a picnic on a sunny day and following the river past Jesus Green and Midsummer Common ending up on Stourbridge Common.
In a matter of minutes you’ve left the crowds behind and are surrounded by green fields and grazing cows. There’s nothing better than getting lost in the long grass, laying down a blanket and tucking into a picnic. The most strenuous part is choosing where to to park up the bikes. My favourite spot is alongside the river under the canopy of a tree where we can watch rowers go by and peek into the boats mored up alongside us.
This time around we met with friends and all brought something homemade to share between us. Much to my delight the sweet outweighed the savoury and the sugar gave us plenty of energy for the cycle home. I feel so blessed having the river a matter of minutes from my front door, and when the sun comes out there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.
